Values are so important when building a working relationship, and why a business exists is a really good way of communicating them.

 

"In the late seventies I was a young child in the back of our family car with my sister, we had pulled up at a petrol station to buy some fuel. My father was talking to the garage owner who was putting fuel in the car. My father was explaining to him that he was leaving a poorly paid job in the motor trade and starting self employment as a way to improve our family life.

 

The garage owner was already a customer of my father and offered to loan my father one thousand pounds to start his company and have it repaid through the supply of car parts. Sure enough my father started the company and in the first two months repaid the loan by way of car parts. The business grew at an astounding rate being the main importer for Robert Bosch in the UK and a supplier to Rolls Royce. At its peak the company was close to being floated and quoted on the London Stock Exchange.

 

Some years later, it was explained to my father that half of his business was owned by the person that originally loaned the one thousand pounds. My father could not prove that he had repaid the debt and had to pay him out, soon after the recession of the eighties hit. Many accountants later, poor advice, poor record keeping and my father turned to drink and became very unhappy; family life became hard.

 

My motivation for becoming an accountant is not just taxation, rather honest advice on how to grow a company and be safe."
